Festivals are fixed to a tithi, a lunar day, not an English date. A lunar month runs shorter than a solar one, so each festival drifts across the Gregorian calendar yearly, and a leap-month occasionally resets it.

What is the most important festival in Braj?

Janmashtami, Krishna's birth, is the supreme festival of Braj and of Mathura especially. Radhashtami at Barsana fifteen days later is its twin. For spectacle, the Holi cycle; for moonlit beauty, Sharad Purnima.

Which festival is best for a first-time visitor?

For a first-timer I recommend Sharad Purnima for beauty or Janmashtami for atmosphere — but if crowds worry you, come for an ordinary Ekadashi or Purnima instead.

How the Calendar Works

In Braj we live by the moon. A festival is fixed to a tithi (a lunar day) within a paksha (the waxing Shukla or waning Krishna fortnight) of a lunar maas (month). That is why Janmashtami, Holi and Diwali never land on the same English date twice. Two hinges anchor the month — Purnima (full moon) and Amavasya (new moon) — and the periodic leap-month, Adhik Maas, is held especially holy here. For the great divine festivals the timing is scriptural. Krishna's birth is kept on Bhadrapada Krishna Ashtami with the Rohini nakshatra at midnight, Moon in Taurus; Radha's appearance fifteen days later on Bhadrapada Shukla Ashtami at midday — night and day, waning and waxing, the same Ashtami on opposite fortnights, two halves of one whole.

October to March is the comfortable window. April–June is genuinely punishing; if you come then for a summer festival, travel at dawn and dusk, carry sealed water, and never attempt a midday parikrama.

1The single best darshan for a first-timer is Banke Bihari early on a non-festival morning — on a festival day the crush there is genuinely dangerous.
2Monkeys at Kesi Ghat and around Govardhan snatch phones, glasses and prasad daily — keep nothing loose in your hand.
3At Holi, the thandai is sometimes laced with bhang (cannabis) — ask before you drink.
4The genuine Mathura peda comes from a few long-established sweet-houses, not the railway-platform stalls.
5Give your generosity to a temple hundi or a real gaushala, never to donation-pressure pandas.
